Larry Brott, AFRL Materials and Manufacturing Directorate

Lawrence Brott is a materials engineer in the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio where his job responsibilities include creating functional materials. Dr. Brott received his bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While earning his doctorate degree in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Brott performed his research at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Polymer Branch on nonlinear optical polymers. After working in industry for several years, he returned to AFRL and joined the Soft Matter Materials Branch where his research duties include device fabrication, optical materials development, and microencapsulation.

Martha has earned a global reputation for her work with companies with industrial biotechnology and nanotechnology platforms. She is a recognized authority on chemical regulation and premanufacture approval under the evolving Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Her involvement in the federal policy process regularly brings her before Congress and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on behalf of companies, consortia, and trade associations.

UV curable alkyds were synthesized by functionalizing hydroxyl terminated medium and long linseed oil alkyds with methacryloyl chloride or acryloyl chloride. Two glycerol based reactive diluents were prepared by reacting glycerol with methacryloyl chloride or acryloyl chloride. Structures of UV curable alkyds and reactive diluents were confirmed by 1H NMR, FT-IR and ESI-MS. Real time FTIR, photo-DSC and UV-Rheometer were used to study the curing kinetics of UV curable alkyd with 0-30 wt% of reactive diluent. The conversion of methacrylic and acrylic double bonds are above 80% within 10s of UV radiation at wavelength ranging from 320nm to 500nm. The polymerization rate increases with the addition of reactive diluent, however the final conversion slightly decreases with increasing percentage of reactive diluent due to the formation of crosslinking between UV curable alkyd and reactive diluent limiting the mobility of the reactive double bonds. DMA was utilized to determine the Tg and crosslink density of each system. With the increase of reactive diluent percentage, initial elastic modulus and crosslink density will also increase.

Tour of DVUV, LLC

dvuvJoin us before the kickoff of the Radtech Fall Meeting in Cleveland, OH on October 22 with a tour of DVUV, LLC; applicator of UV-cured powder coating for Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) wood components. DVUV is one of the few MDF powder coaters in the country and supplies components for the retail, healthcare, hospitality, education & office furniture industries.

Coffee, doughnuts, and pastries will be provided along with a tour of the DVUV facility. Transportation will be provided from the Renaissance to DVUV and back. We look forward to welcoming you to Cleveland!
