As with all chemicals, it is important that the potential health
and safety hazards associated with UV/EB process technology be
understood and that chemicals and process equipment be handled
safely in the workplace. This information is meant to be a guideline
for the handling of UV/EB raw materials and processing equipment.
It is the responsibility of the users to read and understand Material
Safety Data Sheets, labels and process equipment instructions.
This guide is intended to provide safety
and handling information in a "user-friendly" outline
format; however, the MSDS of the supplier should be consulted
as the primary safety and handling document. Following this guide
does not guarantee compliance with any law or regulation. Companies
involved in distribution, handling, processing and use of UV/EB
systems should consult with their applicable and possible future
regulations.
Chemical Hazard
- May cause skin and eye irritation.
- May cause respiratory tract irritation.
- May cause skin sensitization.
- Minimal ingestion hazard.
- Typically contain minimal volatiles
Storage & Handling
- Maintain head space to support the oxygen requirements of the
inhibitor.
- AVOID contamination with peroxides, strong oxidizing
agents, copper, copper alloys, carbon steel, iron, rust, strong
acids and amines.
- Store in closed containers at temperatures recommended by manufacturer.
- Keep out of direct sunlight.
- DO NOT use steam or electrical drum heater to heat containers.
- AVOID freezing. If necessary, follow proper thaw procedure.
Personal & Protective Equipment
- Use safety glasses/goggles with UV protection, as needed.
- Wear appropriate gloves (butyl/nitrile).
- AVOID contamination of clothing.
- Wear impervious safety shoes. AVOID canvas, suede and nubuck.
- If usage results in vapor/mists/aerosols, use respiratory equipment.
Housekeeping
- Keep work area clean.
- Use absorbent rags to clean spills immediately.
- Dispose/launder rags appropriately.
Personal Hygiene
- Do not eat, drink or smoke in work area.
- Avoid contact with surfaces/objects that may be unknowingly
contaminated. Prolonged exposure may result in irritation.
- Remove and clean jewelry (ring, watches) that may come in
contact with UV/EB material.
- Wash hands, face and contaminated clothing with mild industrial
skin cleanser and soaps after handling UV/EB materials.
DO NOT USE SOLVENTS to clean skin or clothing.
- Do not reuse contaminated clothing/jewelry until properly
cleaned.
- Discard contaminated shoes and leather goods.
- Shower after work shift.
First Aid
- Flush contaminated eyes or skin thoroughly with water for 15 minutes.
- Use soap and water on skin OR waterless cleaner, if needed.
- If overcome by vapors/aerosols/mists, remove to fresh air.
- If ingested, do not induce vomiting.
- Seek medical attention if irritation/symptoms persists.
UV Process Equipment
- Ensure electrical guards in proper place.
- Ensure the lamp cooling systems are operating properly.
- Ensure proper ventilation of UV lamps.
- Ensure UV light source is properly shielded. Flush contaminated
eyes or skin thoroughly with water for 15 minutes.
EB Process
Equipment
- Ensure safety interlocks are functioning properly.
- Conduct personal and equipment monitoring as per manufacturer
recommendations and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure electrical guards in proper place.
